Such is the intelligence of Mother Nature that She provides powerful remedies along with a controlling agent which prevents harm. But no one should take excess of any medicine. Simply because too much of any one thing will make you ill or feel ill, whether it is a normal food, a modern medicine or a herbal remedy. No one expects to live for ever.

The aim of medicine should be to both postpone our final years and to make them more comfortable and freer from disease. However, this booklet does not recommend ignoring all the advice given by your medical practitioner. Content of this Booklet Having taken an interest for many years in natural remedies, and having always used herbalists to deal with various complaints, in I decided to undertake a formal study of the subject.

This opened my eyes to how the plants in my garden and the so called weeds in the allotment, could provide powerful aids to a healthier life. Now I do not poison the dandelions in my lawn; I dig them out and dry them in the sun. I pick the flowers and leaves from the wild pansies hearts ease which grow all around the garden instead of weeding them out.

I gather the whole plant of the cleavers which cling to the fences and other plants. All these common plants have potent chemistry which can be harnessed by the ordinary gardener. Thus getting back to the days, many centuries ago, when the plants which grow around us provide cures for the ailments which are also around us.

In the s, my first herbal doctor demonstrated his belief in the intelligence of Mother Nature. For example he would say such things as, "Where you see stinging nettles grow you will find the remedy, doc leaves, not far away.

So as an introduction to this vast subject, I will show how any person can provide themselves and their family members, remedies with the use of tea bags, tinctures and capsules. My own daughter now uses a sage tincture for her own and her children's coughs, colds and sore throats. She often brings her bottle to me for a refill. She will not use anything else, as it is so effective. Making sage tincture is so easy, you can do it almost with your eyes shut.

Read on. This they do because they provide, as well as nutrients, natural substances which counteract some of the imbalances and malfunctions of the human body; as well as either curing or preventing common ill- nesses. Always get organic foods if you can. The residue of insecticides and chemical fertilisers in non-organic foods, can build up in the body and may cause illness or disease eventually.

With all this subject of natural cures we should realise that in many cases the plant or food does not do the curing directly, often it stimulates or assists the immune system to deal with the condition itself. The human immune system can go to sleep - as it were. This means it does not perform at its best. In India there is a system called Ayurvedic Medicine. It does not treat any illness directly - it attempts to discover the imbalance in the patient's own metabolism and to provide the necessary stimulus to prompt the immune system and other systems, within the body of the patient, to cure the disease.

This system has existed for many thousands of years. Modern herbalism recognises this function which plants can provide, that of waking up the immune system and getting the patient's own body to cure itself. There is no more powerful curing agent than the human immune system when it is working at full throttle. Unfortunately modern sedentary life styles and unhealthy foods with chemical additives means that this rarely happens.

Apple Cider Vinegar :- Lowers blood sugar and insulin levels and may therefore assist weight loss. It can also lower cholesterol and therefore act in heart disease prevention. It increases the sense of satisfaction from eating food, meaning you will eat less and may therefore assist any weight reduction program. Bilberries :- These have powerful anti-oxidants which improve vision; especially night vision. But they are also well known for preventing and reversing the damage caused by free-radicals in the eyes especially the retina.

So they are useful in preventing and arresting macular degeneration of the retina. Broccoli :- The anti-oxidant action of broccoli detoxifies the retina, so it is instrumental in preventing macular degeneration of the eyesight. Eat it raw for maximum benefit. Flax Seeds linseed and Pumpkin Seeds :- These are both high in omega-3, help to lower cholesterol and therefore are good for heart health. Sprinkle some on your breakfast cereal. As some seeds may pass through you without being digested, 10 seconds in the coffee grinder will ensure you get more benefit from them if you add them to other meals.

Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc and are therefore beneficial to prostate health. Some studies have linked pumpkin seeds to slowing or reversing prostate growth. Eat them uncooked. Garlic:- The ancient Roman naturalist Pliny 1st century AD advised the use of garlic for more than 60 different health problems. I eat two or three fresh cloves, put in the microwave for ten seconds, just before going to bed.

I rarely get colds, coughs or flu' perhaps once in 5 years. Garlic has potent oil in it which is, antibiotic, bacteriostatic, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, anti-carcinogen, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, fungicide, anti-thrombic etc.

Test have shown that garlic has a detrimental effect on harmful bacteria in the gut, but the opposite effect on good bacteria. Need I say more. Cooked too much some oil is lost. That's the reason for 10 seconds; it makes them just edible. A short time under the grill is the same. Ginger :- An anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It can help fight common colds and flu. Available in fresh root form from most supermarkets.

Grate some fresh ginger and make a tea for calming an upset stomach or reducing nausea. It is very effective in reducing muscle or joint pains. With possible anti-diabetic properties it may help reduce blood sugars. Also helps to reduce cholesterol. It can help fight infection and the anti-oxidants in it may also improve brain function. My wife has a ginger tea made from fresh grated ginger every evening before going to bed.

She sleeps very well. Honey :- Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. The benefits of raw whole honey are numerous. Used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for more than 4, years; considered valuable in restoring balance to all bodily systems.

Used commonly for sore throats with lemon added. Enhances the immune system with its friendly bacteria. Manuka and Scottish super honeys stimulate the immune system cells in the gut; and can kill bacteria in wounds that modern ointments fail to treat. Healing and relieving immediately when put on a burn or scald. Some years ago I kept 3 bee hives in my garden.

We all had plenty of whole honey with cappings, pollen and wax, from the hives. We all suffered less from colds, coughs and sore throats in those days. Onions :- Similar benefits as garlic but not as potent. Also a source of vitamin C, so will help fight infection. They will also help lower bad cholesterol. Eat them raw if you can or lightly cooked. The main value of oats is their ability to reduce cholesterol due to the valuable elements they contain.

Four or five days a week I have porridge oats for lunch with a little honey added. Also I mix oat bran with wheat bran to add to my breakfast cereal. With the various foods that I have added to my diet since , I have reduced my bad cholesterol from 7. I have never taken any medication for high cholesterol.

Oats will also lower blood pressure and balance blood sugar levels. It also has an anti-cancer effect. I should also mention the value of the seed husks and the stalks from the oat plant, known as oatstraw. It is a powerful nerve restorative and brain tonic.

It has a specific action on brain and nerve cells. I prepare capsules with oatstraw in them for my wife which she takes every day. How much Mother Nature has packed into one humble plant. I discuss making capsules in Chapter 3. Seaweed :- This is the latest good to eat vegetable. Farmed extensively in Japan, but soon to be available from UK off shore farms.

Rich in magnesium, iodine, calcium, iron and vitamins, it is a valuable source of elements needed for all-round health. It is so loaded with these substances that only small amounts should be eaten as there is a risk of having too much of some elements in your system. As already mentioned, too much of anything may make you feel ill. But the main benefit of seaweed is the iodine. European foods were found to be seriously lacking in iodine at the beginning of the last century.

This was the reason that all table and cooking salt was legally required to have iodine added. This is still the case. Hence if you have reasons to reduce your salt intake then it is possible you may need more iodine. The function of iodine is to assist the thyroid gland to function. If it gets slack your pituitary gland will give it a kick into action with a hormone; called 'thyroid specific hormone' TSH.

The thyroid is the conductor or master of ceremonies of the entire endocrine orchestra. This includes the pituitary, hypothalamus, parathyroid, adrenals, pineal, pancreas and others.

So if the thyroid is slack so are all the others and your body metabolism will suffer. Hence the tiny amount of iodine which the body needs is vital. Here is the real value of seaweed. See 'Kelp' in Chpt. Being high in Omega- 3, eaten raw they are good for brain health as well as lowering cholesterol, so they are good for the heart as well. A small handful every day will add considerably to your overall fitness.

And if you have taken the Government's advice in eating less meat, walnuts will make up for the body's need for protein. The microbe known as Bacillus Bulgaricus discovered many centuries ago in Bulgaria has been shown to improve overall health and many in the Balkans area have lived to well over as a result of really good health. It is a very good bacteria. How can it do so much good? The full answer is a long one.

But briefly, our health from eating all foods is entirely dependent on what happens at the interface of the blood circulation with the membrane in the middle gut small intestine. Very few nutrients in foods can be absorbed by the gut into the blood stream, because the food is dead but the membrane is alive. To benefit us the food has to be eaten again in the gut by good bacteria. There may be different kinds of bacteria in the gut. They are the factory for nutrition and immunity.

It is only good bacteria which are able to eat the food and produce beneficial chemistry that the membrane will accept from a living organism. Many foods contain bad bacteria.

This is unavoidable, more so with meat. Bad bacteria will kill or eat good bacteria. The good bacteria in live yoghurt kills bad bacteria and enhances the reproduction of good bacteria.

Hence your gut stays in good condition and you benefit more from the food you eat. I have eaten a bowl of live yoghurt Bacillus Bulgaricus every day for the last 50 years at least. We make it at home 2 pints at a time. The culture we use continues for ever. A small spoon of it makes the next lot. Friends and family members have taken the culture and recipe from us and are using it every day.

Commercially produced yoghurts cannot be shown to have the same value, whatever they claim. As with most valuable foods, home made is better; and many of the tips here come from many years of personal application in the home and long term personal experience.

It is one of the most effective methods of using natural remedies. Herbs contain both oil based and water based materials which contain the medicinal value of the plant.

Steeping in boiled water for up to ten minutes will extract both oil and water based substances by diffusion. After ten minutes the tea, made from boiling water, will be cool enough to drink. Keep bashing or stirring the bag to assist the diffusion of the value of the herb into the hot water.

You can buy herbal tea bags from a health food shop or you can make your own. Making your own means you will be sure of how fresh and organic the contents are and you can mix them with other things to improve their effect.

The main additive which I put into all preparations tea bags, capsules and tinctures is cayenne pepper. It is a very hot herb so it only needs a small amount. But because cayenne opens the capillaries in the body, it actually increases the effectiveness of any herb by 3 to 5 times or more than without it.

Hence all herbal remedies are much more effective with a little cayenne added into them. Making your own bags also means you can put as much or as little of the herb in each bag to suit the situation; and you can produce tea bags with herbs that are not available in shops.

Also it is much, much cheaper to make your own and 40 tea bags can be made in less than 20 minutes, when you are practised at it. Remove labels and thoroughly Small hopper holds herb. Easy clean. Always label contents. I prefer it as I do not need to make up the bags and I can chose which herbs I want on any particular occasion. I have more than 40 different herbs in my medicine cupboard. More than half of which either grow in my garden or have been collected from local allotments areas and dried in the sunshine.

I should say here that many medicines are not suitable in pregnancy, this includes many herbal remedies as some are very powerful. A pregnant person should always check before use. Any herb material intended for tea bags or the tea maker needs to be chopped or ground up a little.

I often use a small electric coffee grinder for 5 to 10 seconds, depending on the original size of the herb parts to be chopped. When putting the herb into the grinder I add the cayenne. This ensures it is well mixed in. So I do 10 or 15 secs. You need a small set of scales which can measure to the nearest 2 grams. Between one and two grams per bag is sufficient depending on the bulk- iness of the herb. This is just above a level teaspoon for most herbs.

Here pulled tight together and tied. They then act to suspend the are a few healthy tea bag remedies. They will still be lighter colour compared to the older leaves on the plant. Weigh them and then dry them in the sun or in a warm place. After a few days weigh them again. Then weigh them each day until the weight stays constant. This will ensure there is very little moisture left in them. They can be chopped or just crushed in the hand.

Store in a small kilner type jar. I use old coffee jars with the polythene seal in the lid see picture. But any sealable air tight jar would be OK. It is also effective to relieve irritation in the bowel or rectum. Has an anti-tumour effect. Blackcurrant leaves :- Benefits are mostly the same as blackberry leaves; collect and treat the same.
